Job description


The Health Care Worker is an integral member of John Howard's team and serves to deepen the standard of care for clients in the housing division (Tiny Home Community and other JHSOK supported housing and shelter locations around Kelowna) by delivering health support services related to daily living (hygiene, physical health, and home health); providing health case management and goal setting; and connecting clients to community health supports.

The Health Care Worker works closely with the Health Care Manager, Housing Manager, and other people on the client care team to define and deliver plans of action and support so that clients can live successfully in shelter and residential settings.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Monitoring health and safety concerns, dealing with potential health emergencies and initiating an action plan for improvement and prevention.

  • Providing minor wound care and assisting residents with hygiene with a focus on safety and health independence.

  • Administering medications and Naloxone in event of overdose.

  • Conducting client intakes & discharges pertaining to health case management.

  • Supporting clients in articulating and setting health related goals and identifying needs in achieving goals respectful of the client’s personal lifestyle choices.

  • Liaising clients to health care services and accompanying them to care facilities as appropriate.

  • Maintaining accurate and timely documentation related to client case planning, interventions, health & safety.

  • Working collaboratively with other team members and management.

Job requirements

  • A degree or diploma from a recognized Health Care Aide Program/Human Service Work.

  • Experience working with individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use and passion for providing person-centered care.

  • Ability to apply client intervention skills in the context of health-related goals.

  • Must be open to working in a pet friendly environment.

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, boundaries, and confidentiality.

  • Excellent engagement skills with diverse populations.

  • Sensitivity to the unique needs of those of Indigenous ancestry and ethno-cultural groups, and persons with disabilities.

  • BC class 5 DL, clean driver’s abstract, use of personal vehicle for business travel around Kelowna.

Primary hours of work are Mon-Fri 8am-4pm.

This full-time position is temporary for maternity leave coverage until September 8, 2025.
