John Howard Society of Okanagan & Kootenay (JHSOK) has been supporting the vulnerable in the Okanagan community for more than 60 years with programs in community inclusion, restorative justice, shelter, and specialized housing. It is known for its innovative approach to addressing homelessness and other social issues with dedication to building a safe, healthy, and inclusive community for all.

We at LoveHR are pleased to be assisting JHSOK with hiring for their next Director of Facilities (due to retirement). The Director of Facilities enables the agency to fully and safely operate their programs in owned and contracted spaces.

The Director of Facilities must be an authentic, result-driven, inclusive, and accountable leader who strives for excellence, effective and engaged teams, and sound financial management while meeting program goals. Reporting to the Executive Director and as a member of JHSOK’s senior leadership team, this individual helps shape the strategy, vision, and culture of the organization and will be directly responsible for:

  • Maintaining a healthy, safe, and structurally and environmentally sound environment for employees, contractors, and clients.
  • Coaching and developing the maintenance team, incl. recruiting, onboarding, training, performance management, handling employee issues.
  • Creating, communicating, and implementing agency’s policies and procedures.
  • Overseeing and delegating activities of contractors and suppliers as appropriate, ensuring quality control, compliance with applicable regulations, contractual terms, and organization standards.
  • Coordinating and implementing emergency/security preparedness, fire safety, and security programs onsite, in consultation with appropriate resources.
  • Operating within the department budget.
  • Liaising with BC Housing on all mutual projects, as well as with other government agencies/funders as required.
  • Supporting the senior leadership team and Executive Director with ensuring the strategies of JHSOK are realized.

Job requirements

JHSOK is seeking a mature professional with a proven track record of leading teams, progressive experience in property management or a related trade, and demonstrated business acumen. The right person will also have strong communication, organizational and relationship-building skills, computer competency, as well as compassionate attitude towards vulnerable population, incl. persons with experiences of drug use, homelessness, and criminal justice involvement.

JHSOK offers a competitive salary, extended benefits, RRSP matching, generous paid time off and flexible schedule between 32-40 hrs/week. Starting full time salary will be $84,000 with opportunities for increases based on experience, expertise and contributions.

Conditions of employment include a valid BC class 5 driver’s license with satisfactory driver’s abstract, full vaccination for Covid-19, and a clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector search.
